Knowing is half the battle.
A popular children’s television show in the 80’s known as G.I.JOE entertained boys and girls alike with their intense battle scenes and positive words of wisdom at the end of each episode. Faithful viewers were left with a final scenario of what to do or not to do in a complicated situation and then each child would learn something powerful that could help along the journey in life. It’s hard to forget the famous lines at the close of every show. “Now we know, and knowing is half the battle”.
Looking over the obstacle courses of life, we find our own little individual battle scenes. The wars within us are the strongest and the longest battle we’ll ever face. There is one particular gray area that we’ve all encountered at least once in our lives. It leaves us confused and even weary from the exhausting attempts. That battle continues to be the war on our health.
We’ve tried absolutely every fad from sweet chocolaty shakes to inch –removing wraps. We’ve been educated on the matters of proteins and carbohydrates and we’ve all become professionals at portion control and calorie counting. So, with a mass production on weight loss bars and 90 day fat burning DVD’s, why has America still reported so many fatalities in the war on our health?
As a former personal training specialist and hip hop dance fitness instructor, I‘ve learned several thing over the years. I’ve learned the proper form of a squat, and I’ve learned the 90 degree angle of which your knee must bend when doing a lunge. I’ve learned the strategic avenues to take to create rapid weight loss and I’ve learned that each experience is incredibly different than the next. What I never took the time to study, and what no Gym facility took the time to teach me, was the significant details of the very foods that this beautiful earth has yielded for our own health gain. Manufactured processed packaged weight loss items like protein shakes, and dietary water pills are suggested on the market of fitness more than the simple ole’ apple. On the small occasions that a knowledgeable trainer might suggest a food plan including items like apples, bananas or oats, it might be because they’ve simply been trained to suggest it, not because they’ve taken the time to educate themselves on how each fruit or vegetable can assist your life.
It’s time to ask why, my friends! Why does the long quoted phrase, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away coin to be true’? Why do the trainers suggest a banana? Why are health fanatics walking around with a gross looking mixture of something green and brown in their handy dandy juicing devices?
Like me, so many folks out there are absolutely tired of NOT KNOWING. We’re thirsty for knowledge and we’re even ready to find it in the places we should have looked in the very beginning. The farmer’s Market and the produce aisle’s have been waiting for us to come to our senses and let the light bulb shine in our intelligent brains. Allow me to flip the light switch so that we can begin to defeat this war with a new perspective. Here are a few rules of engagement in the war on our health.
1. it’s time to ditch this processed food obsession. It’s basically loaded with addictive ingredients that are altering hormones, suppressing metabolisms, and removing natural healthy bacteria’s from your bodies EVERY DAY!
2. Study the foods. Did you know that the tiny chia seeds are intensely loaded with more fiber than an apple and they act as a great appetite suppressant? They hydrate the body due to the chia gel they contain and have proven to be an awesome help to athletes. Did you know that apples are more than fiber providers? They are rich in polyphenolic compounds and these phytonutrients help protect our bodies from the dangerous attacks of free radicals. (Free radicals are the cell’s enemies that come in to destroy our cellular strength.) Did you know that Oregano is not just a fun spice to add to your Italian dishes, but also a powerful super food that helps to block the growth of certain threatening bacteria’s including but not limited to Staphylococcus aureus. The Greeks and the Romans considered Oregano to be a symbol of joy and happiness in the ancient times. Now we know why? This list can continue with every single food from the earth. Take your time to find out what you need in your diet and discover the rapid difference. It’s worth the search.
3. Many health professionals are suggesting that you don’t obsess over the organic labels and their right to some degree. Focus on healthy eating first. You should know however that there are certain foods that are loaded and even grown with filthy pesticides that tend to slow your weight loss ability down. Some of these pesticides even have the power to reverse your health goal direction by adding chemicals into your system that you cannot digest. They’re toxins and no matter how pretty your bunch of grapes may look, if their covered in pesticides you’re defeating your purpose. Remember the dirty dozen rule. http://www.organic.org/articles/showarticle/article-214?vm=r
4. Juicing is a fun way to get it all in! Not only is juicing entertaining because of its fast action and immediate results in your glass, it’s one of the best solutions to the fear of eating unpalatable things. Face it! We all don’t like the taste of kale or spinach. We’re not all on board with celery or beets, but when it’s juiced you’ll discover how easily the bitter is masked by the sweet. It usually only takes one apple to cover up the taste of a vegetable. Make a day of experimenting with different fruits and veggies or go with my personal favorite. A handful of spinach, an organic apple, one banana, and a few berries.
The battle on our weight loss and ultimately our health actually boils down to something incredibly basic; earth foods. BUT we’re still like little lost sheep if we do not know what each food does and how we can use it for power. Take the time discover what foods can do for you. They are the key to your victory in the battle of our health. It’s important for us to know what our weapons are and in this case our weapons are the cell strengthening, immune fighting, appetite suppressing foods that come directly from our own beautiful earth. As the G.I. JOE show proclaimed at the end of each episode, “now you know…and knowing is half the battle”. The other half is applying it. Here is to a healthier 2014. Happy fresh food shopping.
